Thanks to the Toronto and Region Conservation Authority, the Don Valley Girls were lucky enough to participate in the 21st Annual Manulife Paddle the Don!
The TRCA has provided a unique opportunity for people to paddle the Don River from Ernest Thompson Seton Park to the mouth of the river at the Keating Channel. At this year’s Manulife Paddle the Don fundraising event there were more than 750 paddlers of all ages, on 30 canoes and kayaks and 16 corporate teams. This event has raised over $475,000 since it started in 2002! The proceeds of this event will help to support environmental initiatives such as the Don River Tree Canopy Program and the Don River Stormwater Management Program. The Don River Tree Canopy Program provides funding and resources to the Don Watershed Regeneration Council for projects related to the restoration and management of the urban tree canopy in the watershed. And the Don River Stormwater Management Program supports projects and community engagement activities that are directly related to mitigating the impacts of stormwater in the Don River watershed.
The Manulife Paddle the Don event is organized through the Toronto and Region Conservation (TRCA), The Living City Foundation, the Wilderness Canoe Association and the Don Watershed Regeneration Council, along with the support of many dedicated volunteers and watershed supporters. The event is sponsored by: Manulife Financial, Black Creek Historic Brewery, The Complete Paddler and Starbucks.
